VANDEMAKER STORE
Pietervreedestraat 15
Tilburg

vanaf 1 maart 2018

Rijksstudio award 2015 by the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam

20/5/2015

Rijksstudio award 2015 rijksmuseum amsterdam kitty ontwerpt kitty bollen 20 april 2015

KiO / Kitty Ontwerpt participated in the Rijksstudio award 2015 of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.

She made a shawl which was inspired by a painting of Jan Brandes, the Cape flower 1786. The base is a cashemere-wool with elasthan.

The flower made of virgin wool and silk, got the shape by using a combination of felting techniques.

The original tekst of the painting was embroidered on the shawl in the TextileLab of the Textielmuseum Tilburg.

To finish the shawl it got the KiO's unique 100%merino wool handfelted edge.

The enormously powerful and exceptional shape of the flower is what inspired me to use the felt technique. The shawl was an integral part of the wardrobe of a woman during the time this image was made. It feels like you are painting with wool and when it shrinks by heat it will lead a life of its own. Finally the fibers attach and become a whole.

The special properties of this technique always take care for a surprising and unique design.

The Rijksstudio award dares you to design.

Everybody can participate with every form of art, as long as the designs are based on the collection of the museum.

An international jury of experts revieuw the submissions and

the 10 best designs will be shown in the Rijksmuseum.

At 20th of april 2015 the winning participant has been announced at the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.

Unfortunatly KiO did not win!

Museum Rijswijk, textile biennial 2015

09/5/2015 - 27/9/2015

During the Textile Biennial in the museum Rijswijk the shawls of KiO will be sold in the shop. Museum Rijswijk is showing textile artworks by nineteen international artists. Apart from the great diversity of textiles and applications, there are also conspicuously common threads among the participants this year. The most important one? All the submitted works provide material for thought and reflection. Textile inherently appeals to the touch. Sensations and associations are evoked at the touch and sight of particular fabrics. Vintage clothes and hand-crafted pieces, that only a couple of generations ago were made in every household, conjure up memories of particular people or times. Making one's own clothes, embroidery and knitting are no longer a natural part of daily household tasks and techniques are being forgotten.
